The night was meant to celebrate Paulo César Wanchope's debut as Herediano coach, but Sporting FC had other plans. The first half was tight and goalless, with the hosts unable to make a difference.
The game broke open after the interval. José Mario Pinto opened the scoring and, just ten minutes later, Alexander López extended the lead for Andrés Carevic's side.
Herediano tried to respond, but the final blow came in the closing minutes: Daniel Colindres, on as a substitute, pounced on a poor clearance from goalkeeper Dany Carvajal to seal the 3-0 away win.
Sporting climbed to fourth on eight points. Herediano stayed on four, and the new era began with more questions than answers.
