San Carlos closed the first half of the Apertura season with a statement win over one of the tournament's best teams. The game was decided in the first half, when Jefferson Rivera headed home a cross past Kevin Briceño.
Amarini Villatoro's Cartaginés, fresh from knocking Saprissa out of the Central American Cup, pushed for an equaliser but ran into a well-drilled opponent who knew how to protect their lead.
Rivera has become Walter Centeno's big-night man: he had also scored the only goal in the win over Alajuelense at the Morera Soto.
The result lifted San Carlos to fourth on fifteen points, ahead of Alajuelense. Cartaginés stayed second, behind a Saprissa side that finished the first half of the season on top.
