The match did not decide qualification, but it did decide the order of Group C, and in Tegucigalpa it was played like a clásico. Olimpia struck early with a header from a long throw-in, before the clock reached the quarter-hour.
Hernán Medford's Saprissa went looking for the equaliser, but an error by goalkeeper Abraham Madriz after the break allowed Jorge Benguché to extend the home lead.
Saprissa captain Mariano Torres pulled one back with a left-footed strike shortly afterwards to set up a tense finish, but Eduardo Espinel's side managed the lead in front of a crowd that, according to the Honduran press, exceeded twenty thousand.
Olimpia finished unbeaten with a perfect record. Saprissa came second, which pitted them in the quarterfinals against another Costa Rican side: Cartaginés.
