Cartaginés needed a win to stay alive and got it through patience. The first half finished goalless and the game opened up after Amarini Villatoro's substitutions.
Geancarlo Castro, introduced in the second half, opened the scoring from a corner. It was his third goal of the tournament and made him the competition's top scorer. With little more than ten minutes left, Alonso Hernández sealed the 2-0.
The win left Cartaginés and Motagua level on points, goal difference and head-to-head. The tie-break came down to fair play: Los Brumosos had collected fewer yellow cards and finished top of the group.
FAS were eliminated. Cartaginés advanced to the quarterfinals, where an all-Costa Rican tie against Saprissa awaited.
